Why Your Botox or Dysport Isn’t Lasting (and What You Can Do About It)
So, you got your Botox or Dysport treatment, loved the results… and then suddenly it felt like everything wore off way too soon. Sound familiar?
At Enhanced Beauty and Wellness, located near Glenbrook Plaza/Richmond Road in Calgary, we hear this concern more often than you’d think. The good news? You're not alone — and there are legit reasons why your neuromodulator might not be lasting as long as you'd hoped. Let’s break it down.
First, How Long Should Botox or Dysport Last?
In general:
Botox: lasts around 3 to 4 months
Dysport: often kicks in a bit quicker and may last 3 to 4 months as well (sometimes a touch longer in some clients)
But here's the thing: that’s just an average. Everyone’s body is different, and a variety of factors can affect how long your results stick around.
Why Isn’t My Botox or Dysport Lasting?
Let’s go through the most common reasons:
Your Metabolism Is Fast
Are you naturally active, high-energy, or work out frequently? If so, your body may metabolize the product more quickly. That doesn’t mean you did anything wrong — just that your body processes the neuromodulator faster than average.Dose May Have Been Too Low
Everyone’s muscle strength and facial anatomy is different. If the initial dose wasn’t strong enough to fully relax the muscles, the effects might wear off sooner. At Enhanced Beauty and Wellness, we assess each face individually and adjust doses accordingly. Sometimes clients are nervous and want to start conservatively — and that’s okay! A tweak may be needed after the first round. You're Going Too Long Between Treatments
If you wait too long between sessions, your muscles can fully “wake up,” making it harder to maintain those long-term softening effects. Consistency = better results.Your Body Might Build a Tolerance (Rare but Possible)
In rare cases, the body can develop antibodies to Botox or Dysport, making them less effective over time. If we suspect this, we may try a different brand or adjust your treatment plan.Lifestyle Factors
Stress, lack of sleep, sun damage, or smoking can all impact how your skin ages and how long your treatment results last.
What You Can Do to Make Botox/Dysport Last Longer
Here are some helpful tips we recommend to our Calgary clients in Glenbrook, Signal Hill, Westhills, Aspen, and surrounding SW communities who want to maximize their treatment results:
Stay on a regular schedule
Most clients see the best and longest-lasting results when they book Botox or Dysport every 3–4 months. Coming in just before everything fully wears off helps train your muscles and maintain smoother results over time.
Consider Zinc Supplementation
Zinc levels in your body can impact how well and how long Botox or Dysport works. Several studies, including one published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, have shown that people who take zinc supplements may experience longer-lasting neuromodulator effects. Zinc plays a key role in how the botulinum toxin binds to receptors at the neuromuscular junction.
The most cited study used a supplement called Zytase, which includes zinc (50 mg) and a blend of phytase enzymes taken four days before injection.
For general support, a daily zinc intake of 30–50 mg (in the form of zinc picolinate or citrate) may be beneficial.
Always check with your healthcare provider before starting any supplements.
At Enhanced Beauty and Wellness, we’ll happily guide you on whether this might be helpful for you specifically.
Use the right skincare
We recommend ZO® Skin Health products to support long-term results. Products with antioxidants, peptides, and retinol help protect and rejuvenate your skin so that your injections work better — and last longer.
Prioritize sun protection and lifestyle habits
Daily SPF, hydration, stress management, and avoiding smoking all play a role in how quickly your skin ages — and how long your Botox or Dysport results will last.
Let us customize your dose or treatment
If your Botox isn’t lasting as long as expected, it doesn’t mean it’s not working — you may just need a different approach. Whether it’s adjusting your dose, changing injection points, or switching between Botox, Dysport, or other brands, we’ve got options.
